Not content with Great Britain’s rule, the thirteen colonies united in 1774, ousted British officials in 1775, and appointed George Washington as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army in the American Revolutionary War. The French support was instrumental in the 13 colonies’ triumph over the British armies, leading to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783 and the colonies’ official sovereignty.

Under the leadership of the Founding Fathers, the thirteen colonies declared their freedom from the monarchy of King George, William Frederick III. The Independence Day Document, also known as the United States of America, was a testament to the courage and vision of the people in June. It was submitted/introduced by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia, declaring the USA independent from Great Britain’s authority. The process of declaring independence was a meticulous one. The Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson in seventeen days with feedback from four other members (Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingston), was revised and approved by Congress on July 4.
